Crews will begin upgrading a 5-mile portion of Rainbow Boulevard this weekend, leading to traffic restrictions on the busy road.
The Rainbow Boulevard Pavement Improvement Project, which kicks off Sunday, affects a stretch of the busy north-south thoroughfare between Tropicana Avenue and Silverstream Avenue, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.
The project will include pavement improvements, upgraded traffic signals, and Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades.
As part of the project, NDOT has identified three intersections along Rainbow at Nara Vista Way, Via Olivero Way, and Del Rey Avenue where median changes are needed. The three intersections were chosen based on traffic data and crash history, with the planned changes designed to decrease the risk of crashes and improve traffic flow.
Initial traffic restrictions associated with the project will begin this weekend. Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning, through Aug. 14, Rainbow will be reduced to one lane intermittently in each direction between Tropicana and Silverstream. The lane closures will shift as work progresses along Rainbow. No work will occur on the project on Friday or Saturday evenings.
The traffic restrictions are needed for crews to safely install traffic control devices, prepare the work zone, and begin construction.
The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027. During times when construction is active, the speed limit on stretches of Rainbow will be reduced to 35 mph through work zones.
