A magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck an area northwest of Las Vegas early Thursday morning but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or serious damage.
The quake hit just after midnight in Beatty in Nye County, about 120 miles northeast of Las Vegas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was nine miles deep and was centered in an area about 29 miles southeast of town.
The unincorporated town, found along Interstate 11, is about 10 miles east of Death Valley National Park in eastern California.
Last month, an earthquake centered near Red Rock Canyon rattled the Las Vegas Valley, causing no damage.
Quake history
Nevada’s history is full of temblors. The biggest in the state’s recorded history happened in 1915, which was a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck about 50 miles south of Winnemucca. The magnitude 6.5 Monte Cristo earthquake struck near Tonopah in May 2020.
Since 1915, eight of Nevada’s largest earthquakes have all registered magnitude 6 or over. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Ridgecrest, California, shook Las Vegas in July 2019.
