RALEIGH, N.C. — The Vegas Golden Knights are on the brink for the first time this year after losing 4-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at Lenovo Center on Thursday.
The Hurricanes lead the series 3-2 and will have a chance to win their second Stanley Cup championship in franchise history in Game 6 at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday.
Pavel Dorofeyev scored twice for his first goals of the series. His first goal came on a power play in the first period to open the scoring.
But Carolina responded with three unanswered goals, including the tying goal from captain Jordan Staal to become the first player since 1953 to score a goal in the first five games of the Stanley Cup Final.
Carolina added two goals in the second period. Forward Andrei Svechnikov scored on a power play following a cross-checking penalty on defenseman Brayden McNabb, and center Sebastian Aho scored on a tap-in.
Svechnikov added his second goal on a tap-in following a double-minor high stick on captain Mark Stone.
The Knights entered Thursday outscoring Carolina 9-1 in the second period this series.
Goaltender Carter Hart allowed four goals for the fifth consecutive game this series.
Center William Karlsson left in the second period with an apparent arm injury and did not return. He left the arena to undergo further testing.
This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
