In Sunday’s Review-Journal, columnist Victor Joecks asks why anti-Trump Republicans keep losing. He states that President Donald Trump has empowered Republicans to elect real conservatives.
But what are real conservative voters? I see that today as being defined as those who always back Mr. Trump’s views and actions without question.
As a reformed Trump supporter, I confess that I was under the spell of the very talented, opportunistic huckster and grifter that he has revealed himself to be. I wanted so badly for our country to elect a presidential candidate who would command respect. I overlooked his crude sophomoric bloviating because I was desperate to have a president who would push back against the left-leaning Democrats who were dictating the direction of our American culture.
The great irony is that the destructive policies of Democrat administrations pale in comparison to the chaos, divisiveness and damage that Mr. Trump has foisted on all Americans, except the very wealthy.
He stated, “I don’t think about Americans financial situation. … Not even a little bit,” when asked by a reporter to what extent, Americans’ “financial situations” dictated his deal-making with Iran. “The only thing that matters when talking about Iran — they can’t have a nuclear weapon.” He goes on, “I don’t think about anybody.”
I dare say that if you ask most any American if the most important thing in their lives is whether or not Iran has a nuclear weapon, the resounding answer would be something like, ‘I don’t care about Iran. I’m struggling from paycheck to paycheck.”
I, like millions of other former MAGA folks, didn’t know I was voting for a bait-and-switch master marketer. But we are all now paying the price of our gullibility. I’m hoping Republicans shed the Trump leech-like attachment and that future elections see anti-Trump candidates succeed thanks to a true, pure conservative agenda.
