I always thought that the abuse of the handicapped parking placard was a prime example of American’s greed and laziness on an unfathomable scale. But driving northbound on Interstate 15 to downtown between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. gives “I don’t care what the law is” new meaning.
The law requires motorists to honor a car pool lane for two hours in the morning and for two hours in the afternoon. But nine out of 10 drivers blatantly ignore the restriction every day, even though traffic flows so well now that cheating is not even necessary.
Double solid white lines mean nothing either. Drivers don’t care. Stick a highway patrolman out there to write tickets for cheating in the car pool lane, and any budget deficit will be wiped out pronto.
But until then, drivers will keep cheating to gain some imagined advantage. Unfortunately, it’s the American way.
