A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck an area about 250 miles northwest of Las Vegas on Monday night but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or serious damage.
The quake hit at 7:39 p.m. about 48 miles northeast of Tonopah, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was four miles deep.
Aftershocks of 3.1 and 3.4 magnitudes were recorded in the area within 15 minutes after the first quake. The area has seen a big swarm of minor quakes in the last two months, the Nevada Seismological Lab reported on its website.
Nevada’s history is full of temblors, from the biggest one in the state’s recorded history in 1915, which was a magnitude 7.3 that struck about 50 miles south of Winnemucca, to the magnitude 6.5 Monte Cristo earthquake that struck near Tonopah in May 2020.
Since 1915, eight of Nevada’s largest earthquakes have all registered magnitude 6 or over. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Ridgecrest, California, shook Las Vegas in July 2019.
