Primary election season is here, which means the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s voter guide is online.
Every two years, the newspaper sends out questionnaires to local, state and federal candidates, allowing them to share their background, qualifications and policy positions in a single, easy-to-navigate location. It’s a one-stop shop that allows candidates to state their positions in their own words, and allows voters to research multiple contests to inform their ballot choices.
You can access the guide to the June 9 primary election at lvrj.com/voterguide.
Although the guide went live Tuesday morning, participation has thus far been limited. Questionnaires were sent out in April to email addresses on file with the Clark County Election Department, the secretary of state’s office and local city clerk’s offices.
Those who don’t find themselves in the guide or can’t find their invitation and still wish to participate can email voterguide@reviewjournal.com.
“We encourage all primary election candidates to respond to the questionnaire. It’s not too late,” Review-Journal Executive Editor Glenn Cook said. “This is information voters will use to make their choices.”
Partisan and nonpartisan seats up for grab this year include positions in Congress, the Legislature, the Clark County Commission and city councils. Dozens of judicial races across multiple courts will be decided, as well.
Nevada’s closed primary system means that voters casting ballots in partisan races have to be registered with the corresponding party. Some local races, like mayoral contests and judicial seats, are nonpartisan.
Mail ballots will be distributed in the coming weeks. In-person early voting kicks off May 23 for the June 9 primary election.
The secretary of state’s office announced last month that voters would start receiving official text messages with information about the elections.
In Sunday’s newspaper, the Review-Journal will publish a voter’s guide dedicated to judicial candidates on the primary ballot.
The state’s general election is Nov. 3.
