The Basic baseball team did not get its chance to defend its Class 5A state title on the field.
Instead, after the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association pulled Basic out of the 5A Southern Region playoff bracket on Thursday, a district judge ruled on Friday against an temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction in an effort to get the Wolves back into the playoffs.
Multiple Basic baseball players and parents were in attendance at Friday’s hearing. An attorney representing the players and parents tried to argue that Basic was not aware that a player on the team, who attended Delta Academy, an online school, was academically ineligible.
Several players have taken to social media to reflect on the sudden end to their season after the judge did not rule in the team’s favor.
“What a ride. Never thought it would come to an end this way but some things are out of our control,” wrote senior Andruw Giles, an Oregon commit, on Instagram. “I am so grateful for the relationships and brotherhood I have built over the last (four) years at Basic.
“They can take everything away from us but they will never be able to take away our brotherhood. … It’s heartbreaking to say that this is over but we can smile know all of the positive memories we have together.”
It’s the second time in three seasons Basic did not appear in the postseason for playing an ineligible player. In 2024, the Wolves had to forfeit 11 league games and an unspecified amount of nonleague games in the final week of the regular season and did not qualify for the playoffs.
“Nobody expected it to end like this, but sometimes even when you do everything right, people will still find a way to bring you down,” wrote senior pitcher Lincoln Evans, who is committed to CSN, on Instagram. “One thing they will never take away is the family and brotherhood we’ve built at Basic over the last four years.
“… Like I said sophomore year when were were snubbed from the playoffs … you know who the real champs are.”
