A man accused of driving his pickup truck drunk and running over a woman at a bus stop near the Strip on Saturday was captured on video tossing what police said was an empty bottle of vodka shortly after the crash.
Dario Nunez Jr., 38, of Las Vegas, is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on a single felony count of driving under the influence causing substantial bodily harm. Bail has been set at $175,000, according to Las Vegas Justice Court records.
Nunez was jailed after authorities said in an arrest report that his Dodge Ram pickup ran up over a curb on West Sahara Avenue and into a woman waiting at a bus shelter at about 2:47 a.m. The driver of the pickup was turning from Las Vegas Boulevard South onto Sahara at the time, police said.
The victim, 28-year-old Fiona Dominguez of Jamaica, New York, suffered serious injuries including a broken pelvis, a brain bleed, and other significant internal injuries, police said.
Nearly an hour after the crash, an officer was scouring the area looking for a suspect’s vehicle when Nunez approached the officer and said he had called 911 about a crash. Police said Nunez reported “he had struck a curb with his Ram truck, did not know where he had struck the curb, and that he had been drinking.”
Police said they smelled alcohol on Nunez. An investigation uncovered video from a nearby hotel that showed the driver of a Ram pickup emerging from the vehicle shortly after the crash and throwing something over a nearby fence.
“Officers later located an empty ‘Titos’ vodka bottle discarded to the north of where the Ram was parked,” police said.
Police said when they inspected the truck they found blood and biological material on it. The truck also had damage to a right-side mirror, and portions of a mirror found at the crash scene matched the truck’s, police said.
Nunez is scheduled to appear in Justice Court on Tuesday for a status check on the filing of a criminal complaint.
