In response to the Saturday Review-Journal wire-service article, “NY loses $74M for not revoking illegal truck licenses”:
Let me get this straight. The U.S. Department of Transportation ordered the state of New York to review the licensing of immigrant truck drivers after last year’s audit revealed significant problems with the state’s licensing procedures. Yet the state of New York refuses to revoke nearly 33,000 questionable commercial drivers’ licenses issued to immigrants. Consequently, the state will not receive $74 million in federal funds.
Are you kidding me? How do you equate the high probability of loss of life and/or significant injuries caused by potentially fatal truck accidents with withholding federal funds? Why doesn’t the Department of Transportation use every means available to get these drivers off the roads now?
