The holders of a César Chavez sculpture in Las Vegas, Chicanos Por La Causa has disavowed their support of the civil rights activist after a New York Times investigation revealed a history of sexual assault allegations against Chavez on Wednesday.

“In light of these disturbing reports, which are substantiated as more survivors step forward, we are halting any and all formal recognition of Cesar Chavez. Let us be clear: Our work has never been defined by one individual,” Chicanos Por La Causa’s statement reads. “It is rooted in a broader movement shaped by many leaders, including Dolores Huerta and countless others who have advanced opportunity and equity for our communities. And as a trusted organization, we will continue to help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.”

Hours after the New York Times investigation broke, Dolores Huerta, a labor rights activist and co-founder of United Farm Workers of America alongside Chavez, came forward and said she was among the women and girls sexually abused by him.

Ahead of “César Chavez Day” on March 31, San Francisco, Texas and Arizona have canceled celebrations at the request of the César Chavez Foundation. “César Chavez Day” is a state holiday in Nevada. State officials have yet to make a statement on its handling amid Wednesday’s news.
