The Las Vegas Raiders found a trade partner for former starting quarterback Geno Smith.
Smith’s original team, the New York Jets, agreed to send the Raiders a sixth-round pick (No. 208 overall) in exchange for Smith and a seventh-round pick (No. 228) in April’s draft.
The Raiders planned to release Smith if they couldn’t find a trade partner. They agreed to pay the bulk of his salary to help facilitate the deal, and Smith agreed to a restructured contract.
Smith, a second-round pick of the Jets in 2013, spent the first four seasons of his career in New York. After stints with the Giants, Chargers and Seahawks, Smith was traded to the Raiders for a third-round pick last March and named the team’s starting quarterback.
He threw for 3,025 yards and 19 touchdowns with 17 interceptions in a disastrous campaign that netted the Raiders the No. 1 pick in the draft.
They are expected to select Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza as the quarterback of the future in April.
