Three inmates died in Southern Nevada prisons just over a month apart, state corrections officials announced Monday.
Keith Sullivan, 53, died at High Desert State Prison, located outside of Indian Springs, on Feb. 6, officials said. Sullivan was serving a sentence of 9 to 22.5 years for grand larceny of a motor vehicle, grand larceny and burglary. He entered the Nevada Department of Corrections from Washoe County in 2019.
Carlton Burnett, 63, died at High Desert State Prison on Monday, officials said. Burnett was serving a sentence of 24 years to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. He entered the Nevada Department of Corrections from Clark County in 2018.
Corrections officials also said 78-year-old Albert Cota, an inmate at the Southern Desert Correctional Center, was pronounced dead at Centennial Hills Hospital on Friday. He was serving a sentence of 40 years to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. He entered the state prison system from Clark County in 2006.
The department did not provide any information on how the three men died, but it said it requested autopsies.
Sullivan’s death marked the fifth known death at High Desert State Prison in February. Four inmate deaths occurred in the span of a week last month, officials announced Feb. 20.
