LETTER: Colleges and soaring tuition

Syndicated columnist Tom Purcell’s Sept. 12 op-ed (“Here’s why college tuition is so high”) hit the nail on the head. The greedy colleges are prioritizing tuition over education.

Schools try to convince high school graduates when they first enroll that, when they get their degree in “Gender Studies” or “Underwater Basket Weaving,” they will have no problem securing a good-paying job and will be able to pay-off their student-loan obligation.

To compound matters, upon graduation students are convinced (conned) to get a graduate degree in their chosen field of study, and to incur additional debt.

It’s time to place that blame where it belongs. We should require the greedy colleges to refund the tuition to those students who were misled to believe that they were on the right educational path to a successful future.

In addition, the colleges should be required to provide statistics on students that graduate within four years, and students who obtain employment in their chosen field within one year of graduation.
