My neighbor teaches third grade at a northwest valley school. She told me she has two third-graders who cannot read — one boy does not even know the alphabet. Her time with each child is limited because she’s busy teaching a classroom of third-graders who can read. Her school does not have a teaching position devoted to ensuring these kids get the help they desperately need.
At the end of the school year, these two will be passed on to the next grade level. How can this be allowed to happen? I thought the job of the school district was to teach, not just pass along children who cannot meet even kindergarten standards, let alone the standards of a typical third-grader.
