A homebuilding giant has opened a big new community at a cleaned-up former manganese mining site in Henderson.

PulteGroup announced that it held a grand opening Thursday for Aries, its new master-planned community along the south side of Lake Mead Parkway about 5 miles northeast of Boulder Highway.

Aries spans more than 1,100 acres, and five subdivisions are now open for sale, with prices ranging from the $300,000-range to the $500,000-range, according to a news release.

It will also feature homes from PulteGroup-owned Del Webb, which develops 55-and-over communities.

Plus, Aries will have parks with pickleball and sand volleyball courts, splash pads, play areas and BBQ pits, the builder said.

Aries occupies the former Three Kids Mine site, which produced manganese for the U.S. government between 1917 and 1961, according to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection.

During that time, manganese ore was mainly used for the construction of ships and tanks during World War I and World War II, the division reported.

Overall, the redevelopment project area spans 1,146 acres, but among that, only 410 acres comprised the “impacted area” of the former mine, according to the division.

The estimated cleanup costs came to around $257 million, the division reported, adding that the contaminants found at the site included arsenic, lead, petroleum hydrocarbons, dioxins and asbestos.

Anthony Molloy, director of redevelopment, economic development and tourism for the city of Henderson, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in June that all the remediation work had been completed.

There was no environmental contamination anywhere on the former mining site, he noted, adding the only cleanup work left at the time was to haul off waste rock.

City records show plans for upwards of 3,000 homes on and around the former Three Kids Mine site.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
