LETTER: Aaron Ford’s ‘affordability emergency’

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Aaron Ford states that, if elected, he will declare an “affordability emergency” on day one. He implies that he has magical powers as governor to stop utility and insurance companies from jacking up prices. After serving in the Legislature and as Nevada attorney general, Mr. Ford should know that the Public Utilities Commission acts independently to regulate utility rates. Further, the Division of Insurance regulates insurance rates and policies.

If Mr. Ford does have this magical power, he should have exercised it as attorney general. More likely he doesn’t understand the powers and authority of the Nevada governor’s office. After all, Mr. Ford couldn’t define what “larceny” meant when he was state Senate majority leader in 2017.
