The monsoon season has been a no-show so far in the Las Vegas Valley, but it suddenly showed up in Henderson on Monday afternoon.
About 1:30 p.m., a strong storm inundated some neighborhoods in Henderson, causing minor flooding near Nevada State University and Wagonwheel Drive. About 0.55 inches fell in that area, according to gauges at the Regional Flood Control District. The Mission Hills section saw 0.51 inches. Other areas in east Henderson saw measurable rain. A few areas near Boulder City recorded 0.12 inches of rain.
The National Weather Service, in a post on X on Monday morning, said there would be “increased storm chances mainly along and southeast of I-15” on Monday afternoon. Expect “gusty outflow winds, blowing dust and brief downpours” with these storms.
The monsoon season, which began in late June and lasts through September, has been almost nonexistent for the valley during a very dry year.
Harry Reid International Airport has recorded 0.18 inches of rain this month, its wettest month since February (0.35). But the August average is 0.32. Reid has registered 0.69 inches of precipitation so far in 2026. The average through mid-August is 2.64. In 2025, the airport had seen 2.05 inches through mid-August.
Reid saw no measurable rain in July, although it recorded a trace July 19. On June 23, the airport recorded 0.02 inches of rain, breaking a rainless streak of 124 days. It was the only rainfall of the month.
Another extreme heat warning
Southern Nevada is under an extreme heat warning until 8 p.m. Friday. Expect “dangerously hot conditions” this week, with temperatures between 108 and 112 degrees for the valley, the weather service said. The normal high for late August is 102.
The warning was issued Monday morning, about 12 hours after another extreme heat warning expired.
This week’s extreme heat warning is the fourth in the past month. The summer’s first extreme heat warning lasted from July 23 through July 27. The second started July 30 and was extended several times, finally expiring Aug. 9.
Cooling stations
Clark County has activated cooling stations at community centers, libraries and other buildings across the valley through Wednesday.
The cooling stations’ hours vary depending on the location. The stations include several locations in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson.
