A Las Vegas animal shelter is seeking help as it has entered a “critical space crisis.”
The Animal Foundation said in an Instagram post Sunday that it had crossed into the critical red capacity zone of 454 dogs or more on-site. At 470 dogs at the time of the post, the shelter said there are many potential risks to animals.
“When our kennels stay full, every part of sheltering becomes more difficult. Dogs experience more stress, illness can spread more quickly, and our staff and veterinary teams must stretch every resource further,” The Animal Foundation said in the post.
The largest animal shelter in Nevada, The Animal Foundation called on the community to help in a number of ways.
The most direct means of helping the shelter’s capacity crisis is to adopt a medium or large dog that is at least six months old and 35 pounds or more. At-risk animals who needs to leave the shelter as soon as possible are also first candidates for adoption.
Fostering a medium or large dog is also an option to help ease shelter numbers.
The shelter urged those who cannot bring a dog home to share the Instagram post to help find more people that can adopt or foster.
Adoptions fees for adult pets, six months or older, are waived for the month of August as part of the “Clear the Shelters” initiative.
The Animal Foundation is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
