LETTER: Clark County judge’s decision in traffic death is absurd

A subhead in the Review-Journal’sThursday Nevada section stated, ”No prison for man whose reckless driving killed valley teen.” Here is the absurd quote from District Judge Jennifer Schwartz speaking to the defendant: “You are a child, and I know it wasn’t intentional. This is your one shot.” Personally, I was not aware that a “child” could legally drive a car.

Additionally, I was not aware that drivers get one shot to kill someone without paying a very steep price. I also wonder how the judge knows the act wasn’t intentional when the driver was going 30 mph above the speed limit and chose to race at that speed.

The fact that the jury found the “defendant guilty of reckless driving resulting in death” after about an hour of deliberation makes the judge’s decision all the more absurd.

When are judges going to keep their personal feelings separate from delivering a fair and impartial decision? I can have only extreme sympathy for the parents and family of the man killed by a “child.” The “child” has a life to live after the probation, but the victim killed has nothing. The family has only fading memoirs and dreams of what could have been.
