The current bills addressing stock purchases by members of Congress do not go far enough. Any person elected to federal office should be required to divest all of their stock holdings prior to being sworn in and to convert it all to Treasury bills and Treasury bonds. This should apply to immediate family and ranking staff. These investments differ in maturity times, but both help fund government. This would tie a member’s investment portfolios directly to the financial well being of the United States. It should also continue for two years beyond service.
