LETTER: Professional politicians

In his July 15 letter, Michael Westerhouse lists political aspirants (all Republicans) who had money behind them. Not all of them won. He also states that “no one should be elected to the office of senator or president who hasn’t at least served as a representative or governor.”

While there are no absolutes when it comes to determining the character or veracity of any candidate, I prefer a number of candidates without the legacy of institutional financial dependency. How self-funded or lesser-known nominees will act once they’re elected will always be a crapshoot, but you have to wonder if these professional, lifelong perpetual candidates have the public’s or donors’ best interests top of mind.

It’s amazing how many professional politicians end up wealthy while “humbly” serving the public.
