The Metropolitan Police Department announced that one of its K9 officers died on Tuesday.
K9 Leico, a Belgian Malinois, died at the age of 10 after suffering complications from a seizure, according to the department.
Police said in a post on social media that K9 Leico served alongside his handler, Officer Sam Carrillo, for the past eight years.
“Throughout his career, the team assisted Patrol, SWAT, Major Violators, and numerous other specialized units in locating and apprehending dangerous suspects,” police wrote in the post. “Together, they were responsible for 93 finds and 9 apprehensions. Leico’s dedication, courage, and relentless work ethic made him an invaluable member of our department.”
Police said that Leico’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the officers he served beside and the community he helped protect.
