I believe I’ve witnessed a bit of a double standard by the Las Vegas Valley Water District in its monitoring and policing of excessive and unnecessary water usage by Clark County residents.
As part of a Homeowners Association, I have seen local water patrols driving through my neighborhood, looking for evidence of poor watering practices, and I completely support everyone doing their best in the conservation of the water resources. However, I am questioning the thoroughness and span of these observational tours.
I utilize county parks in the neighborhood near my house for daily walks most every morning. During my walks, I have observed a number of opportunities where water used to irrigate the park’s vegetation was blatantly being wasted. I have observed the same gross leaks on a daily basis for days or weeks on end. These included geysers where sprinkler heads have blown off, large pools of water being generated by ruptured underground supply lines and drip irrigation water areas where previous plantings might have been. I would have assumed that the ground crew of the county would address these, but they never seem to be corrected.
As the levels of water in Lake Mead continue to drop, I would expect that everyone, including the county, does everything they can to help conserve. I’m hopeful that someone in the county parks department or water officials become aware of these conditions and address this unnecessary usage.
