LETTER: Nitwits on the road

I have to disagree with parts of George LeMay’s recent letter about shredding cars. All insurance companies should notify their policy holders that, if your car is confiscated and destroyed under certain circumstances such as street racing, intersection burnouts/takeovers or whatever else is put on the list, the loss of your vehicle is not covered. There is a premise in psychology that states “if you want behavior modification, you have to provide incentive.”

I do agree lienholders should have an opportunity to repossess the vehicle and recover their loss. It’s not a matter of trying to be tough. It’s a matter of establishing a zero tolerance for behavior that is unacceptable from a safety standpoint. It also inconveniences the public when these self-absorbed, inconsiderate morons decide they are going to do whatever they want at everyone else’s expense.

Without serious consequences, oftentimes there is little change. Losing your car one way or another should be a significant incentive considering the next time one of these knuckleheads has a beer can in his hand it just might be his left front fender. And as for the value of the car? That’s irrelevant. If you are stupid enough to take the risk, then I think that is self explanatory.
