Adrian Mateos earned his sixth career World Series of Poker title late Monday, becoming the youngest player ever to accomplish the feat.
Mateos, 31, topped a star-studded final table to win the $250,000 buy-in Super High Roller No-limit Hold’em event, which is the highest buy-in of the summer at the WSOP.
The professional poker player from Spain claimed the $4,334,411 first prize, defeating Bryn Kenney during heads-up play.
“When I come to this tournament, it’s my favorite of the series because it’s super expensive and also because the structure is better than the others. It’s three days, we play deeper, and I just love it,” Mateos told PokerNews. “I was super excited to come today and compete. Everything went my way, and I was able to win the race.”
Mateos’ first bracelet, which are awarded for tournament victories, came in 2013 at the WSOP Europe Main Event. He also won the WSOP Super High Roller event in 2021.
The poker prodigy is now seventh on the all-time money list with more than $67 million in career live tournaments earnings, according to the Hendon Mob Poker Database.
The victory also continued Mateos’ recent heater after he won the Triton Super High Roller No-limit Hold’em event for $6.37 million in May. He has nearly $12 million in tournament winnings since May.
Mateos was responsible for four of the final five eliminations at the Super High Roller final table, including Jason Koon in fifth place and Sean Winter in fourth. He went into heads-up play with a small chip deficit, but quickly took the lead and eliminated Kenney in a hand with two-pair against Kenney’s top pair.
Kenney, the all-time leading money winner, earned $2.77 million his runner-up finish.
Phil Ivey made his first final table of the summer and was looking for his 12th career bracelet but finished eighth.
