Dedan Thomas Jr. had 22 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead the UNLV men’s basketball team past New Mexico State 72-65 in a Saturday afternoon game at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The sophomore star scored 15 points in the first half to help the Rebels (4-1) to a 37-34 lead at the break despite shooting just 29.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
New Mexico State (3-2) used a late 6-0 run to take a 63-62 lead with 4:08 remaining, but UNLV got the ball inside to Jeremiah “Bear” Cherry for a dunk to recapture the lead for good.
The Rebels tightened up defensively down the stretch, forcing the Aggies to miss their final six shots and eight of their last nine.
Cherry finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Jalen Hill had 16 points and nine boards.
