T-Mobile Arena became the first arena in 52 years to host both the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and Stanley Cup Final games in the same year.
Las Vegas hosted the Frozen Four over two days in April. That event saw Denver crowned champions of NCAA Division 1 men’s hockey.
On Saturday, the 10-year-old arena secured the rare feat by hosting Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, where the Knights took a 2-1 series lead over the Carolina Hurricanes in a double-overtime thriller for the ages.
The confluence last happened in 1974, when the now defunct Boston Garden hosted Frozen Four and Stanley Cup Final games, NHL’s stats and information group confirmed the Review-Journal’s research.
Minnesota won the college hockey title and the Philadelphia Flyers bested the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final that year.
The Boston Garden also hosted both the Frozen Four and Stanley Cup Final games in 1972. That year was a dual Boston win, with Boston University winning the hockey championship and the Boston Bruins beating the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final.
The week of historic firsts continues for Las Vegas on Tuesday, as it will mark the first time the city will host a regular-season Major League Baseball game and an NHL game on the same day.
