Having failed in his attempt to sell off public lands last year, Utah Sen. Mike Lee has introduced a joint resolution in the Senate, which will be coming up for a vote shortly. If passed by a simple majority, SJR 109 (and its companion in the House, HJR 151) would undo the current management plan for the incomparably beautiful Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah.
The plan was painstakingly put together in an open, analytical and collaborative process, with inputs from scientists, tribes, recreational users, local businesses and citizens, and the general public. If these resolutions are enacted, it is very unlikely that the monument’s cultural and natural resources can be adequately protected. Moreover, this same legislative legerdemain could be used everywhere, including here in Nevada, to undo protections for our national monuments.
For everyone who loves our national monuments, now is the time to let Congress know you oppose these resolutions.
