LETTER: Henderson and the parks referendum

Officials with the city of Henderson are attempting to sway voters to stop a property tax that generates money for parks from sunsetting. Officials threaten the voters that the funding is mandatory or the parks and access will suffer.

We have airlines filing bankruptcy from increased fuel costs. Large companies lay off thousands of mid-level management to balance their budgets. Small companies are struggling to stay afloat because they cannot just raise prices without consumer backlash. Workers put in more hours for less pay. Yet, our local governments keep on increasing pay, perks and pensions without resolve.

How can increasing property taxes on people without substantial employment keep the government funded? Politicians know only how to spend other people’s money and have no ability to make hard decisions to control how funds are allocated.

The government’s Ponzi scheme will bust eventually. In the meantime, many government workers get to retire with yearly six-digit pension payouts for the rest of their lives.
